On March 8, 2021, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas designated Venezuela for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the next 18 months, from March 9, 2021 until September 9, 2022. This designation allows Venezuelan nationals (and individuals without nationality who last resided in Venezuela) who continuously resided in the United States as of March 8, 2021, to apply for TPS with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Venezuelans who would like to apply for TPS have 180 day to register with USCIS. TPS is a temporary immigration status granting noncitizens the right to remain in the United States. Individuals with TPS are able to apply for Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) and for travel authorization. All individuals who apply for TPS must undergo security and background checks.
According to Secretary Mayorkas, “The living conditions in Venezuela reveal a country in turmoil, unable to protect its own citizens. It is in times of extraordinary and temporary circumstances like these that the United States steps forward to support eligible Venezuelan nationals already present here, while their home country seeks to right itself out of the current crises.”
