Automatic 36-Month Extension for Green Card Renewal Applicants

On September 18, 2024, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that permanent resident cards (ie. green cards) will now be automatically extended for 36 months from their expiration date for applicants that file to renew their green card.

This change is effective September 10, 2024 and will be reflected on all Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) receipt notices for new and pending applications.

Current applicants with a pending Form I-90 will receive an amended receipt notice that includes this 36-month extension. While their application is under review, applicants may use this amended receipt notice with their expired green card as proof of continued lawful permanent resident status and as proof of valid work and travel authorization for 36 months after the expiration date on their green card.

Individuals that need evidence of their lawful permanent resident status while waiting for their replacement green card may request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office by contacting the USCIS Contact Center to receive an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp after filing their Form I-90.
